Open Letter to Him
by Deb Castellano

i can barely hear you breathing
the farther i fall the further you run
[catch me if you can]
i want to fly so bad it hurts
i clipped my own wings
mewling on the ground
even the little cousins are hidden from me now
you’re trying to teach me something
make me find you
no more easy dreams with your easy smile
tumbled in each others arms
do you remember that night on my living room
floor
i had never seen you so worried before
i didn’t know you could be—
worried
will you wait for me?
i’m still trying to get the hang of this
falling on my head out of the nest
more often than not
i’m still trying to believe i should
talk to you
instead of averting my eyes to the ground
do you ever miss me
like i miss you
late at night with my back itching
the lines of my tattoo burning
calling your name?
